Magnetofluidic damper

Purpose: Damping of vibrations of extended spatial structures (solar panels, antennas, etc.) without reliance on external objects.

Technical essence: The device is based on the use of a permanent magnet and magnetic fluid placed in a closed case.

Scope of application: Mechanical engineering, instrumentation, space technology.

Technical characteristics:

  • Dimensions - diameter 60 mm, height 30 mm; 
  • Weight – 0.14 kg; 
  • Adjustable operating frequency range - (0.3-15) Hz; 
  • Oscillation amplitudes - (0.5-15) mm; 
  • Logarithmic attenuation decrement (with the ratio of the mass of the extinguisher to the mass of the object) 1:40 - 0.15; 
  • Operating temperature range - (- 50 - +100 ) 0C; 
  • Operating range of ambient pressures - (0 – 2·105 ) Pa. 
Advantages over analogues:
  • high efficiency at low frequencies (about 1 Hz), and small (about 1 mm) amplitudes; 
  • simplicity and reliability of the design; 
  • easy adjustment and adaptability. 
Introduction: magnetofluidic damping devices were used in S.Lavochkin NGO, Russia, Moscow.
